2024 Science Based Target Support

2024 SBT Support
ACTIVITY INFORMATION
What we did

In order to limit global temperature rise to well below 2 degrees Celsius and fulfill the goals of the Paris Agreement, emissions must reduce significantly by 2030 and 2050. Local governments often set emission reduction goals to guide their mitigation efforts and support the implementation of the Paris Agreement. The Science-Based Targets (SBTs) initiative provides a framework for communities to set their “SBT,” or emission reduction target guided by the science of the IPCC. ICLEI USA assists members in identifying their Science-Based Targets (SBTs) to ensure US local actors are acting with the ambition necessary to achieve Paris Agreement goals. This support also allows members to engage in global initiatives, specifically Race to Zero, which list SBTs as a requirement.

What we achieved

When a member's inventory is completed and a QAQC has been completed by ICLEI USA, ICLEI USA staff member then provides the member with a per capita SBT that is based on the year of their baseline GHGI and an absolute SBT (in percentage and MT CO2e) that accounts for population growth from the baseline year to 2030. This is an ongoing support offering at ICLEI USA. This activity reports the SBTs provided in 2024.
