UrbanShift

Transforming cities for people and planet

UrbanShift

UrbanShift, supported by the GEF-7 Sustainable Cities Impact Program, helps cities implement integrated approaches to sustainable urban development. The carbonn Climate Center plays a leading role in delivering the program’s global and regional components, strengthening the capacity of cities to drive inclusive, climate-smart transformation.

What is UrbanShift

UrbanShift brings together local and national governments, technical partners, and the private sector to scale integrated urban development solutions. By linking planning, finance, innovation, data, and advocacy, the carbonn Climate Center helps support cities around the world to adopt integrated approaches to urban development, building an equitable, zero-carbon future where both people and the planet can thrive. The Center leads on the following aspects of UrbanShift:

  • Global Coordination: The Center coordinates ICLEI’s contributions to the UrbanShift Global Platform, aligning knowledge, tools, and learning across city and national projects.
  • Regional Leadership in Asia: We lead regional coordination and technical support in China, India, and Indonesia, helping cities plan, finance, and implement sustainable urban solutions.
  • National-Local Dialogues: The Center facilitates dialogue between national and local governments to strengthen policy alignment and unlock support for city-level action in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
  • City Academies on Circular Development and Finance: We deliver in-person and online City Academies focused on circular development and innovative finance, equipping cities with practical tools and peer learning opportunities.

How ICLEI supports UrbanShift

ICLEI is also helping to deliver UrbanShift by implementing our signature initiatives with participating cities, including:

  • Project Support through TAP: UrbanShift cities receive support through the Transformative Actions Program (TAP) to enhance project design, build investment readiness, and mobilize finance.
  • Reporting through CDP-ICLEI Track: Cities are supported in tracking and reporting their progress using CDP-ICLEI Track, ensuring transparency and alignment with global climate goals.
  • Baseline and Impact Monitoring: The Center supports cities in conducting Integrated Sustainable Urban Development Assessments (ISUDAs) to establish baselines and track impact over time.
  • Private Sector Engagement through CiBiX: We connect cities with private sector partners through the City-Business Excellence (CiBiX) process, creating opportunities for collaboration on sustainable solutions.
  • Advocacy and Global Visibility: The Center promotes the voices and achievements of UrbanShift cities through global platforms such as Daring Cities, the UNFCCC Subsidiary Bodies Meetings, COP, the UN Environment Assembly, and other major international events throughout the year.
