Program Goals
The 100% Renewables initiative helps cities and regions take bold, practical steps toward clean energy futures. It supports climate action, improves public health, and creates inclusive local benefits. Participation is open through ICLEI’s Global 100% Renewables Platform and the United Nations Energy Compact.
- Develop clear and cost-effective energy roadmaps to achieve 100 percent renewable electricity, heating and cooling, and transport by 2050
- Prepare investment-ready renewable energy and energy efficiency projects with tailored financial planning
- Align local energy actions with national and global climate targets
- Strengthen local policies that promote energy access, economic development, and energy security
- Facilitate peer learning and technical support through a global network of experts and local leaders
Impact Highlights
- Guided pilot cities and regions in developing renewable energy roadmaps using advanced energy system modeling
- Enabled access to technical guidance, policy frameworks, and financing tools for clean energy transitions
- Produced practical fact sheets on solar, wind, bioenergy, green hydrogen, mini-grids, clean cooking, and more
- Showcased local solutions including off-grid solar and clean cooking initiatives in Kenya, solar irrigation in Indonesia, and renewable energy planning in cities across Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Sweden, and the United States
Join the Compact and join a network
We are building a network of cities and regions interested in achieving 100% renewable energy in their territories, and connecting them with each other and UN-Energy’s platform and resources. The 100% Renewables Energy Compact enables the sharing of knowledge and best practices from local and regional governments across the globe.
