What we are doing

Funded by the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), a core group of organizations, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für International Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP), ICLEI, Local Governments for Sustainability, C40 Cities, the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT), the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) and the World Resources Institute (WRI), works together to accelerate the transition to electric buses in the Global South. Today, air and noise pollution are among the most pressing problems in cities. Most public buses across the world are diesel-fueled, and a large part of GHG emissions and air pollutants come from urban bus fleets. The TUMI E-Bus Mission aims to contribute to reducing these problems by accelerating the transition to electric buses in the Global South. Electrification of buses also fleets entails a unique opportunity to improve the overall quality of service of public transport systems. By taking a holistic approach, cities can leverage electrification to expand access, improve efficiency, and reliability, and increases safety and comfort for the most vulnerable in their community. E-buses are now market-ready and in some regions already have lower operational costs when considering the total life cycle of e-bus fleets in comparison with gasoline and diesel buses. However, the introduction of E-Buses needs long-term targets and planning. Therefore cities need to decide now how to plan and adopt the new technologies into their public transport system.

What we are achieving

Within the TUMI E-Bus Mission there are two approaches: detailed and demand-oriented support for 20 Deep Dive Cities and capacity-building for cities that are part of the TUMI E-Bus Mission City Network. The TUMI E-Bus Mission City Network – led by ICLEI and UITP, is a learning network of cities committed to exploring and/or accelerating the transition toward e-bus fleets within public transport systems. Through the network, members benefit from shared knowledge and resources relating to the transition toward e-bus fleets, including exclusive pieces of training, peer-to-peer exchanges, and more. The network started with an initial group of 50+ cities. By the end of 2022, we aim to inspire 100+ cities. By 2025, 500 cities will be inspired, and these actions will lead to the procurement of more than 100,000 e-buses, resulting in a reduction of more than 15 megatons of CO2 emissions.
