Roadmap New Deal for Nature and People

Roadmap ND4NP
ACTIVITY INFORMATION
What we did

We are losing nature faster than it can restore itself. And without urgent action, significant harm to people and planet is inevitable: inadequate food and water for our growing global population, significant harm to our economies, and the mass extinction of an estimated one million species. The Roadmap ND4NP addresses the call for engaging local and subnational governments to protect and restore nature for the benefit of people and planet – proposing no more loss of natural spaces or extinctions as well as halving the negative ecological impacts of production and consumption. The project will work with local government to ensure their support for a New Deal. This must be followed by strengthened commitments and delivery mechanisms for the UN Biodiversity Convention alongside a strengthened private-sector commitment to action – and then enormous ongoing work in the coming decade. Brazil is the country with the greatest biodiversity in the world, being one of the countries considered as megadiverse. With its continental dimension and enormous variety of terrestrial and aquatic habitats, Brazil is the country with the largest number of plant species, of which more than half are endemic. Biodiversity supports the functioning of ecosystems and provides services that are essential to human life. Globally, biodiversity is decreasing at unprecedented rates and, in addition to deforestation mainly from agriculture and livestock, the accelerated urbanization process is also one of the main drivers of this reduction The years 2020 and 2021 will be decisive for global biodiversity. The current Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 and the respective Aichi Goals conclude their cycle. A new Global Framework for Biodiversity will be adopted during the 15th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), COP15, which was scheduled to take place in October in China. The post-2020 biodiversity framework aims to guide the implementation of the vision for 2050 “Living in harmony with nature” and the relevant milestones for 2030.

What we achieved

The Roadmap ND4NP in Brazil will contribute to strengthening the role of local and subnational governments in systematizing and showcasing the Brazilian perspectives for the Post-2020 Biodiversity Framework. The journey to COP15 (still undefined due to the COVID-19 context) is an opportunity to expand the knowledge of municipal and state governments on the theme of biodiversity, to disseminate and encourage the implementation of practical solutions in their contexts, mobilize cooperation with other relevant actors and generate contributions to the post-2020 global targets for biodiversity. The project will be implemented by ICLEI South America and pretends to: • Recognize local and subnational governments as an integral and essential part in the design and implementation of the Post-2020 Biodiversity Framework; • Strengthen the nexus between biodiversity and other global agendas through an approach systemic, exemplifying as Nature Based Solutions (SbN), local protected areas and Green and blue infrastructures can contribute positively to the solution of local and regional challenges such as food systems, water quality, health, job creation, climate change, well-being and quality of life. • Strengthen and empower local and subnational governments with technical and scientific knowledge on issues linked to biodiversity, reinforcing support for the production and collection of data, aim to improve decision-making;
