What we are doing

Despite abundant ideas, concepts and committed stakeholders, we still face many barriers to action for realizing new forms of urban development and living in Africa. These include access to finance, governance systems and siloed sectors, departments or activities. Nevertheless, there are abundant experiments, cases and organisations that are pushing the boundaries in their work, and which offer lessons applicable across organisations and fields. We need a platform for sharing inspiring lessons between stakeholders who do not typically interact, for inspiring action through engagement with thought-leaders and practitioners, and for evoking commitments to action by platform participants.

What we are achieving

RISE Africa is a movement of urban thinkers, doers and enablers committed to inspiring action for sustainable cities. It aims to: - offer a platform for thought-leadership and partnering (in Africa) - bring together diverse actors/perspectives and build active networks - inspire participants & provoke new thinking - elicit commitments to action & follow up Since May 2020, RISE Africa, convened by ICLEI Africa, has facilitated online showcases, local roundtables and monthly thematic webinars to engage a growing community. The series of engagements has an annual event/festival on and around 25 May as its focal point: Planned around celebrating Africa Day, the festival offers a creative and collaborative platform to exchange ideas and promising practices, and foster interdisciplinary, cross-sector, Pan-African coalitions for exchange and support towards action. RISE Africa draws together multiple themes and initiatives, with an aim to galvanise action to improve the future of African cities. At present, events, photo showcases, video provocations and a discussion series are establishing ICLEI Africa as a strong facilitator and thought-leader.
