RENEW-SEA: Mobilizing and Empowering Subnational Governments in Southeast Asia for Sustainable Energy Transition

RENEW-SEA
ACTIVITY INFORMATION
What we are doing

Given the history of largely centralized energy systems, local and regional governments often do not have the mandates or resources to undertake a sustainable energy transition in their communities. As such, expanding renewable energy is not always a priority, although it may be subsumed under other overarching goals such as expanding energy access. Tackling the climate emergency will require urgent action and mobilization, and so local and regional governments must also be empowered to deploy renewable energy in their territories. They must do so with the powers at their disposal, while accounting for issues related to justice and equity, land use, socio-economic development, etc. This is also true in countries in Southeast Asia.

What we are achieving

Working with cities in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand, this project will aim to empower subnational governments through technical, capacity, and policy support aimed at accelerating the uptake of renewable energy (RE) at the subnational level, providing them with the knowledge, tools, and network needed for successful RE deployment.
