One Planet City Challenge

OPCC
ACTIVITY INFORMATION
What we are doing

Over half of the world’s population live in cities and urbanization will continue to advance. Cities generate more than 80% of global GDP and also account for 70% of global carbon emissions. Therefore, cities hold great potential for opportunities to lead transformative climate actions. OPCC had showcased more than 5,700 actions with a total of 3.9 Gt GHG emissions reduction potential by 2050 as reported by participating cities globally. OPCC further challenges cities to raise their ambitions to meet the targets and commitments made in the Paris Agreement and report these in a standardized reporting platform. OPCC 2019-2020 aims to guide cities to drive towards adopting and implementing actions with the highest impact to their emissions and align with the 1.5°C target.

What we are achieving

ICLEI, in partnership with WWF, built the capacities of cities in reporting their ambitious climate targets and actions in a standardized reporting platform for local and subnational climate actions; the CDP-ICLEI Track. Additionally, ICLEI and WWF offered technical assistance to participating cities in Indonesia and the Philippines on different thematic areas of local climate action planning to complement their participation in the Challenge.
