ICLEI South America Solutions Portfolio 2021

ACTIVITY INFORMATION
What we did

The year 2020 marked the planet and humanity by facing the Covid-19 epidemic. Initially, the international debate focused on the immediate impact on cities in terms of public health, but the crisis also demonstrated the critical importance of local governments in implementing effective cross-cutting policies in a context where cities were the epicenter of impacts and responses to the crisis. We see a tendency to increase the responsibilities of local governments and their possibilities for action - a strengthening of their role. This shows us that local sustainable urban development plays a key role in defining the impacts of humanity on the planet. On the other hand, tackling the health crisis has shed light on the interdependence between sustainable development and health promotion. It is increasingly confirmed that land use, loss of biodiversity and climate change are related to health crises, which in turn bring economic and social crises. The emergence of new diseases has quadrupled in the past 50 years largely due to environmental degradation, showing that pandemics are an environmental issue as well.

What we achieved

There is no doubt that the echoes of 2020 have become a strong call for 2021 to focus on a green recovery that promotes sustainable, environmentally responsible and socially inclusive urban development, pointing out that local and regional governments are the engines of this trajectory. Faced with this challenging context, ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability reinforces its support to local and regional governments in promoting solutions to urban challenges that are aligned with a vision of green recovery. In 2020, ICLEI completed 30 years of experience in developing methodologies to guide the path towards sustainable urban development at the local scale and now, more than ever, this work in line with the contexts and actors of the territory is essential.
