Decarbonization Roadmap

ACTIVITY INFORMATION
What we did

U.S. local governments are setting ambitious GHG reduction targets towards meeting the goals of the Paris Agreement. Once a local government has established a baseline of emissions through a GHG inventory, the next step is to develop a set of linked strategies - a roadmap - towards achieving reductions. To support and inform a comprehensive update to its Strategic Climate Action Plan, King County Washington contracted with ICLEI USA to update to its community-wide geographic-based GHG emissions inventory and update technical analysis for how to achieve a 50% reduction of community-wide GHG emissions by 2030.

What we achieved

The project includes intertwined technical analysis components. The specific tasks were: (1) develop an updated King County community-wide geographic-based greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventory, including a “Contribution Analysis” quantifying key causes/drivers to recent historical trends in countywide GHGs, and (2) an analysis that builds on the inventory to quantify pathways to achieve County adopted GHG reduction targets through 2030. This methodology can be applied in any community across the globe.
