What we are doing

The Communities for Local Green Deals - COM4LGD project recognizes the intersection of the climate and environmental crisis with the social and political polarisation that EU citizens are currently faced with. The innovative solution we propose for a sustainable, just, democratic and inclusive future for the EU is a focus on local community development, climate and sustainability action, community organising, advocacy, and cooperation between citizens and local governments covering all 27 member states. The project consists of debates, trainings and outreach activities targeted at decision makers in line with the ambition above, to address political disillusionment, polarization, and apathy amidst social and ecological crises. This is therefore very relevant to local and regional governments. One event specifically provides a training for 25-50 local government participants on how to empower local governance for just sustainability transitions.

What we are achieving

ICLEI Europe will organize three in person events and several online webinars, among other tasks. Firstly, a gathering for Southern European communities, local governments and beyond to discuss community empowerment for climate change and EGD implementation locally. Secondly, a three day training for local governments on local governance for just sustainability transitions. This will be implemented alongside the October 2024 European Conference on Sustainable Cities and Towns in Aalborg. Thirdly, a European policy event in Brussels to advocate for locally-led sustainability transitions at the European level. These activities will give more local governments the tools and confidence to engage their citizens in creating sustainable futures. It will also give voice to this topic to European policymakers.
