Building Efficiency Accelerator – East Asia

BEA – East Asia
ACTIVITY INFORMATION
What we are doing

About one-third of the global energy demand and one-fourth of global greenhouse gas emissions come from the building sector. Global building energy demand can be reduced by one third by 2050 if identified best practices in energy efficiency are implemented at a large scale across regions. The Building Efficiency Accelerator aims to break down barriers by increasing global and cross-sector collaboration. The Building Efficiency Accelerator is a global partnership of businesses, NGOs, and multilaterals to assist local governments in taking actions to improve energy efficiency in the building sector. Local and regional governments joining the partnership will commit to implementing three actions: one demonstration project, one policy and one method to track the progress. Through working with partners from the Building Efficiency Accelerator, local governments will develop projects and strategies to achieve the commitment. Local governments will assess and prioritize policies and actions, match needs with technical expertise and resources provided by the Building Efficiency Accelerator, develop financial strategies to replicate pilot projects, and track the progress.

What we are achieving

ICLEI is the Local Building Efficiency Accelerator Lead Partner, taking responsibility to plan and execute the work plan, to coordinate participating cities and stakeholders, and to facilitate the engagement among business and local governments in East Asia. ICLEI maintains a long-lasting relationship with participating cities and partners by building an active and easy-to-reach communication channel, provides technical assistance to support cities in applying for international funding, and assists cities to develop commitment and form a feasible work plan. Through the Building Efficiency Accelerator, local governments in China and Mongolia have ICLEI as a reliable partner to inquire about practical information for policy design and planning, to have access to international funding opportunities for project implementation and replication, and to strengthen the relationship with non-governmental stakeholders. The Building Efficiency Accelerator and ICLEI support local governments to cross the institutional, financial, and behavioral barriers.
