Consumption-based and Supply Chain Cohort

ACTIVITY INFORMATION
What we did

Efforts focused on the elimination of domestic fossil fuel uses are critical, but do not fully address the climate crisis if consumption patterns remain unchanged. From large infrastructure projects to purchasing vehicles, food, and consumer goods and services, supply chain emissions average about 5.5x the direct emissions of the organization itself. More and more communities are interested in consumption based emissions but thus far, there is not as detailed a protocol as traditional inventories.

What we achieved

This Cohort provides structured technical assistance to guide ICLEI members through the steps of creating a consumption based inventory and quantifying the greenhouse gas emissions associated with local government operations. The inventory can act as a baseline to inform local government procurement policies and programs to reduce environmental impact, create operational efficiency, and drive innovation. Through 7 sessions, ICLEI sought to provide an overview of the current state of practice for consumption based inventories. We also provided resources and tools for the participating communities to consider.
