What we did

Local and regional governments are taking a central role in the global sustainability agenda. States and municipalities are essential to solve contemporary international challenges in their territory by implementing appropriate public policies. For this, it is necessary to respond to the rapid transformations underway and to lead the way for global changes. To go further and find the potential of their territory with opportunities that generate a positive impact in people’s well-being, in their prosperity and in the environment, is what differentiates the local governments who are part of ICLEI in South America. In our Network, public managers are trained and can access the best practices for informed cities, exchange experiences and knowledge for + connected cities, access solutions for + intelligent territories; influence global negotiations; and have impactful actions and visibility for sustainable territories. We influence sustainability policies in all levels and we drive local action to a low-carbon, nature-based, equitable, resilient and circular development. Our Network and Team of specialists work together to provide access to knowledge, partnerships and capacity building to generate systemic change for urban sustainability. ICLEI South America’s Solutions Portfolio 2020 highlights the main offers and benefits local governments can access throughout the year In order to pave the way towards urban sustainable development.

What we achieved

In nearly three decades of work, ICLEI has developed, tested and scaled up methodologies to guide the way towards sustainable urban development at the local level. This rich experience accumulated allows us to apply a common framework for our global projects and initiatives, which currently follows the stages: analysis, action and acceleration, and in each one follows a step-by-step guideline. This track can be applied to a variety of themes - from low emission to nature-based development - and promotes a cyclical path that allows the continuous improvement of the governments in our Network. This year’s “Cities + Sustainable – ICLEI South America Solutions Portfolio” highlights the following opportunities and initiatives ICLEI provides cities and regions in South America.
