Edmonton Composting Facility
Since 2000, the Edmonton Composting Facility at the Edmonton Waste Management Centre (EWMC) has used the organic waste collected from city households and biosolids (sewage sludge) as resources to create compost, a rich soil supplement. Together with established recycling programs it enables Edmonton to divert over 50% of its residential waste from landfill.
Composting residential solid waste and biosolids is innovative, sustainable and environmentally sound. Located on 25 hectares, the Edmonton Composting Facility is the largest of its kind in North America by volume and size.
The Edmonton Composting Facility

- has flexible operations - the facility allows for advances in waste management technologies and can expand to meet regional needs, population growth and use by commercial waste generators.
- produces quality compost because there is no grinding or shredding of non-organic material in the composting process.
Did you knowWe still recycle about 20% of our waste, but all remaining residential solid waste is taken to the Integrated Processing and Transfer Facility. Organics are then separated and sent to the Edmonton Composting Facility to be converted into compost. |
