This innovating initiative will allow the city to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, given that 53% of urban emissions are generated by transport. To complement the strategy, is necessary to encourage people to use public transport instead of private cars.
The goals will be achieved through the improvement of physical infrastructure and the efficiency of the operation, increasing coverage and optimizing the capacity of the system. The positive outcomes include the reduction of fuels consumption, pollution and further improvement of air quality and reduction in operational costs.

By increasing the coverage of sewage services, is possible to reduce 2.5 times the methane emissions by the installation of waste water treatment systems. Besides, the access to drinking water is a priority for Montería, as a city that envisions a sustainable future that includes social equity and development of its communities. Every year, the first Thursday of February, the whole city joins to participate in the “Car-free day” initiative, where no private cars are allowed from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm. Since 2009 the city of Monteria embraced the challenge to make public space a part of the competitiveness strategy, this requires to formulate a Parks Master Plan to address the intervention, rehabilitation and construction of parks in the urban area, this is an ambitious task that aims to provide well-being to all Monteria’s citizens through quality, security, easy access and sustainability of public space. The intervention includes the construction and rehabilitation of a total area of 320.000 m2 and planting 2000 new trees. The entire project will allow the capture of 1.500 tons of CO2 between 2011 and 2019.
