In order to raise awareness and commitment to energy conservation, the City Environment and Natural Resources Office has been in continuous campaigns regarding the practice of energy conservation. Promoting the use of solar energy and alternative fuels such as biogas digesters has always been included in IECs in barangays and in schools. More so, the use of e-bikes during Eco-police Operations is one way of encouraging the public to support these clean technologies.

In keeping with the principle of inclusive growth under the CDI partnership with Batangas City, USAID through B-LEADERS is supporting the City LGU in its Isla Verde project through technical assistance, mobilizing public-private partnerships, and where appropriate, investments into some of the capital requirements. The expected results of the project will contribute to the two main deliverables of B-LEADERS which are a) reducing GHG emissions and b) facilitating investments into renewable energy.
From January 4 to February 28, 2017, various meetings and coordination activities were done to prepare for the groundbreaking of the Isla Verde Micro Grid Energy Resilience Project. Preparations included finalization of the solar PV modules donation from Sunpower and mobilization of the Meralco team. On March 2, 2017, partners together launched the Isla Verde Micro-Grid Energy Resilience Project. The Batangas City Local Government, Sunpower Philippines, Meralco, and residents of the island marked the launch of the project through a groundbreaking ceremony at Barangay San Agapito, Isla Verde.
The solar PV micro-grid project was designed and is being implemented to complement efforts in protecting natural resources and enhance local energy sufficiency and resilience. The construction of the project is expected to be completed within one year.
Even before the enactment of the Environment Code of Batangas City in 2010, the City Government has been implementing the provisions of RA 9003. However, due to increasing waste concerns such as illegal dumping, improper waste management and collection issues, the City Government created the Eco-Police Program in 2016 which aims to further strengthen the enforcement aspect of the Code. These officers were deputized by the City Mayor as stated in the Code and were authorized to issue citation tickets for violation of any of the environmental policies.

To establish baseline data through quantifying carbon stocks of mangrove forest, the Batangas City Government, in partnership with USAID conducted a study with assistance from University of the Philippines Los Banos. The study is expected to pave way for successful rehabilitation efforts and continuous protection of the City’s remaining mangrove forests. More so, with the emerging issues on climate change, the study will be beneficial in mitigating its effect. By knowing the quantity of carbon dioxide that was being sequestered, the City can create program towards increasing its mangrove forest cover especially in the low-lying areas which has a possibility of being affected my storm surges and other natural calamities.

The City Government of Batangas thru the City Environment and Natural Resources Office conducts annual mangrove planting activities as one of its climate actions. It aims to protect the coastal resources within the Barangay wherein dive spots are located. Expanding the marine protected area of the barangay also intends to rehabilitate the damaged reefs caused by typhoons and illegal fishing. The provision of livelihood is seen to aid the community to have an alternative source of income aside from fishing which in turn could contribute in the sustainable management of their resources. Barangay San Agapito is the chosen pilot barangay to start with.
