The City of Oakland has met all of the requirements for compliance in the Compact of Mayors.
The city has demonstrated its commitment in the fight against climate change by setting a target for carbon pollution reduction, presenting a GPC-aligned inventory, identifying potential climate-related hazards, and developing action plans for reducing emissions (mitigation) and preparing for climate impacts (adaptation).
Complete, high-quality documentation was provided with the assistance of ICLEI`s Low Carbon Team. This has allowed detailed reporting of Oakland’s milestones and achievements on the carbonn Climate Registry (cCR).
According to the City’s Sustainability Program Manager, Daniel Hamilton, “Working with ICLEI and the carbonn Climate Registry has been critical for the City of Oakland in complying with the Compact of Mayors. As the cities of the world get more aligned with consistent and clear reporting of greenhouse gas emissions, we will become more effective in helping to reach the ambitious but critical goals set forth in the Paris Agreement.”
Oakland joins other leading cities like Rio de Janeiro, Paris, Johannesburg, Buenos Aires and Seoul as fully compliant. ICLEI congratulates Oakland on its Compact commitment and for taking action on climate change, and urges others to follow Oakland’s lead in participating in the Compact, which presents an unprecedented opportunity to demonstrate the collective impact of local climate action around the world.
The Compact of Mayors is the world’s leading coalition of local leaders tackling climate change by pledging to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, track their progress and prepare for the impacts of climate change.
