Since 2011, WWF’s Earth Hour City Challenge (EHCC) has called on local governments to demonstrate their climate leadership and ambition. This year, under the theme “Bridging the Gap”, cities and towns in 21 countries have the opportunity to report their inspiring climate commitments, performance and actions through the EHCC’s official reporting platform, the carbonn® Climate Registry (cCR). Take part, report great actions, be recognized as a leader and stand a chance of being a national and international winner!
Running for the fifth consecutive year, the Earth Hour City Challenge now welcomes local governments from 21 countries to report inspiring, big-win climate mitigation commitments, performance and actions in the carbonn® Climate Registry.
This year’s theme is "Bridging the Gap", which refers to the gap between the currently aggregated global climate commitments and the additional commitments and actions necessary to keep global warming below the 2 °Celsius mark. The focus is therefore on ambitious necessary climate action. We all know that COP21 will be a milestone event in the climate negotiations. Yet it is also clear at this stage that we are not close to the commitments we require.
Emissions reductions that pack a punch are those which take into account the cross-sectoral nature of our systems and services. This is why this year’s Challenge is calling upon local governments with robust mitigation commitments and actions which address food, water and energy co-benefits. This also links to supporting the cross-cutting Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
ICLEI and WWF are pleased to call on local governments in the following eligible EHCC countries: new countries China, Ecuador, Peru, Vietnam, Rwanda and Tanzania; and EHCC veterans Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Finland, France, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, South Africa, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Thailand, and the USA.
Click here to register for the EHCC on the carbonn® Climate Registry and to report your ambitious climate commitments and actions (using the online or offline reporting opportunities).
The official deadline for reporting is November 13th 2015, do not miss this unique opportunity to become an EHCC national winner, or global capital, as well to gain recognition at the COP21!
